I was reading an article the other day talking about television networks and their advertising revenues when I came across this interesting fact. The article was giving data about the two most popular outdoor sports in the USA.

Some sports enthusiasts keep statistics on how many people go to all kinds of events. Of course they do, they need to know where to put their advertising dollars. How many people are directly involved is one measure of popularity. This is only regarding sports that are entirely outdoors.

The first one of the 2 most popular outdoor activities or sports watching birds. That is right – birdwatching. Birdwatching as a sport is a little like bass fishing tournaments, humans are competing with nature, not teams against teams. Birding is similar to fishing as a sport because there are bird spotting and bird identification competitions just as there are fishing tournaments. Although the monetary scale for prizes is no where near that of Bass Fishing!

I was amazed to learn how many people are birding these days and it is a low-cost hobby or sport to participate in. Oh, the expenses? Many birders invest in a quality pair of birding binoculars and a good birding guide to get the most out of their birdwatching trips. So if you are going to do serious fishing, you will spend about the same amount.

Really? Yes, I could not believe the second most popular sport is NASCAR racing.The second most popular sport is NASCAR Racing. This amazed me when I read this fact. I guess it is the excitement of the chase and watching the people changing ranks after or even during every event. There are hundreds of thousands of fans attending every NASCAR event all over the country.

It would take 5 or 6 sold out games at Fenway Park to equal the attendance of one popular NASCAR event. What makes this so popular? There are lots of NASCAR events all over the country and thousands of fans go to NASCAR events. They did the stats. That is how they came up with birdwatching and NASCAR as the top two outdoor sports

When I shared this information at the office, no one else guessed the two most popular outdoor sports in America either. Right. Birdwatching and NASCAR racing.
